Pau Alsina i Rius

Barcelona, 1830 – Barcelona, 1897 Politician

Union leader, skilled textile worker by trade, and republican politician. He participated in the revolution of 1868 as a working-class leader and was part of the Federal Center for Workers’ Societies in Barcelona (Centre Federal de Societats Obrers de Barcelona). He became the first elected working-class deputy in Barcelona in 1869 (for the Federal Democratic Republican Party). After the failure of the federal republican uprising in September 1869, he went into exile in France. He was president of the Provincial Committee of Barcelona of Emilio Castelar’s Possibilista Republican Party after the Bourbon Restoration.
