Pascual Madoz Ibáñez

Pamplona, 1806 – Genoa, 1870 Politician / Lawyer

Spanish politician (Progressist Party). He practiced as a lawyer in Barcelona ​​and became Judge of the Supreme Court.

Madoz was appointed Minister of Finance in 1855 and presided the cabinet in 1868. He also presided the Junta Provisional Revolucionaria during the 1868 Gloriosa Revolution. He became governor of Madrid after the Gloriosa. While Minister of Finance, he created the Law of desamortización (confiscation of the Church goods). His aims was to secularize the Church.

Madoz was a firm defender of Amadeu de Saboya’s candidacy to the throne of Spain in 1870.

He published Diccionario geográfico, estadístico y histórico de España, y sus posesiones de Ultramar (Madrid, 1848-1850).
