Josep Güell i Mercader

Reus, 1839 – Reus, 1905 Politician / Writer

Journalist, Writer and Politician. Güell i Mercader was one of the founders of the Reading Center in Reus, and an editor of Álbum de Euterpe and El Metrónomo, among other journals. 

Güell i Mercader was also a member of the Federal Republican Party. He participated in the Revolution of 1868 and was elected to Parliament in 1873. He was ideologically close to Emilio Castelar: they both collaborated in the edition of newspapers, such as La Democracia and La Discusión, both published in Madrid. 

He published many books, among them Coses de Reus, and Història de Reus. His book El regionalismo en la nación (Barcelona 1889) is about Catalonia and the State.
