Francisco González Chermá

Castellón de la plana, 1832 – Castellón de la plana, 1896 Politician / Writer

Businessman, journalist and politician. He began his political career in the Progressive Party and in 1862, he became president of the Democratic Committee of Castellón. He took part in the frustrated insurrection of 1867 and was arrested and sentenced to death. The sentence was eventually commuted to 20 years in prison, but he was amnestied with the triumph of the 1868 Gloriosa revolution. Right at that time, he joined the Federal Republican Democratic Party, and in 1869, he was elected mayor of Castellón de la Plana. González Chermá was one of the signatories of the Pact of Tortosa and was a deputy in the elections of 1871, 1872 and 1873. However, in 1873, he left the party due to discrepancies with Francesc Pi i Margall. During the Restoration, he devoted himself to journalism. He became once more deputy for the Progressive Republican Party during the general election of 1891.
