Juan Manuel de la Pezuela y de Ceballos

Lima, 1809 – Madrid, 1906 Politician / Writer

Nobleman, Military man, politician, and writer. He defended conservative ideas and was the son of the last viceroy of Perú, Joaquín de la Pezuela.

De la Pezuela y de Ceballos was Governor of Puerto Rico between 1846 and 1851, and Cuba between 1853 and 1855. He was appointed Captain-General of Madrid, and in 1868, of Catalonia. He defended Isabel II during the Gloriosa Revolution in 1868. 

He was elected director of the Real Academia Española in 1875 until his death in 1906. As a writer, he was part of the Romantic movement. He translated Dante’s Divine Comedy
